Getting the size right
The most common mistake with wall art is buying too small, and it is almost always a failure of nerve in the shop rather than of taste at home. Two rules cover nearly every situation. Above furniture, the canvas should be about two-thirds the width of the piece below it — for a standard three-seater sofa, roughly 120 cm wide. On an empty wall, the art should fill somewhere between half and three-quarters of the usable wall width. If you are torn between two sizes, take the larger one. A painting that is slightly too big reads as confident; one that is slightly too small reads as an afterthought.
A quick test before you order: cut newspaper or butcher's paper to the exact dimensions, tape it to the wall, and leave it there for a day. Walk past it. You will know by evening.
Hanging a large canvas
Centre the painting at about 145–150 cm from the floor, measuring to the middle of the canvas rather than the top. Above a sofa or bed, leave roughly 15–25 cm between the furniture and the bottom edge so the two read as one group. On plasterboard, use appropriately rated hooks or anchors for the weight — a large stretched canvas is light for its size, but the fixing still matters. Where a wall is genuinely oversized, two smaller pieces hung as a pair often work better than one panel, and are far easier to carry upstairs.
